Naples/Albany-Author’s Report

What a great “author’s weekend”! I started out on a bitterly cold night at the Naples Public Library. My favorite songwriter, Brooke Pevear was there and played my favorite song, Enter the Earth, a few times! There were moms and kids and a very bright, homeschooled girl who has seen a REAL LIVE OTTER! I’m jealous. Even though I made Gaia and otter in Enter the Earth, I’ve never seen one in the wild!

The event, co-sponsored by the Honest Weight Food Co-op, at the Albany Public Library was a full day of fun, music and inspiring presentations. I met some of the members of the Colonie Girls Softball Team. These Gaia Girls helped to build a five-ballfield sports complex that is VERY Gaia-Friendly! They talked about how the wetlands were preserved and what they have done to attract the state bird of NY–the bluebird. The complex has been certified by Audubon. WAY TO GO, GAIA GIRLS!

I was also privledge to learn about the Goff Middle School. This smart school uses solar power (renewable!), recycles and has the coolest organic garden. A garden club of 40 students plans, plants, tends and harvests the garden. They run a farmer’s market M-Th and on Friday donates the rest to the local food pantry. Last year they donated almost 2000 POUNDS of food! It goes to show what kids can do! The Vice-Principal that spearheaded all this Gaia-Goodness is going to hook me up with some photos. Check back soon!

I was privledge to speak and read from Gaia Girls: Enter the Earth. I learned something…don’t stand in front of the Gaia Girls Logo, you look like you have a strange tan! I would like to thank Melissa Wasilewski at the Albany Public Library and Karissa Centanni from the Honest Weight Food Co-op for organizing a great day!

ENJOY THE PICS (click to enlarge)!
