Mission #2
Explore the soundscape! You may want a partner for this mission; Lee explains in the video above. There are a lot of ways to describe sound. For example: “chiki bee bee bee” (chicadee) Do your best-there’s no such things as the ‘correct spelling!’ It is important that YOU remember the sound when you read the words and are able to recognize it again.Be sure to download and print the Mission Log pages for this week. Oh, and right after Lee mentions the sound of her dog, watch the background, you can see her boxer, Peanut, plunk down in the grass for a nap!

I can’t wait to get outside! i am in a very noisy place right now, near the Okefenokee swamp,
so i think i will be able to hear some interesting nature sounds. infact, the millpond out back will do perfectly! all the creatures there, i might hear anything!!!
gaiafan says:

Lee Welles-author says:
Vesta! I like that your tree has a name! Seems like a good place to sit and listen. And WOW! We have a Gaia Gal who gets to hear swamp critters!
hawaiiangaiagirl says:
I heard a whole bunch of swamp things! The Okefenokee is bountiful when it comes to sounds.
I heard crickets every time I went outside.
In the morning when I went out, I heard a wasp
buzzing around the garage, the water droping from a tree left over from the rain and dew the
last morning,( the trees closest to the house are like a big canopy. It always seems like it’s raining after the leaves get wet. After a while they dry out.)millions of birds, just adding their 2 cents to Gaia’s song,i heard someones dog bark, ( It might have been a coyote or wolf!) something that sounded like a monkey. It might have been a bird. some other bug buzzing it’s head off ( probably a yellow fly. There bite hurts!) I think I heard a motor of a plane of car, or truck, or ect. ect. ect. And I think I heard a rooster! There are alot of farms around, as well as swamp. Horses and cows and roosters and dogs are everywhere!! This was on the concrete infront of my Granddaddy’s house. It was the same place as where i found my bug for the first mission. This evening, I heard- more crickets. They can really get in the way of the other sounds. I heard the extra fridge buzzing
out in the garage. I heard more dogs, which also could have been a pack of coyotes. I heard another bug, but that might have been the same bug as last time… I think I heard a DUCK. They are all out in the swamp area, in the back yard.
There are some pretty drakes out there. I also heard a car going down the dirt road. There where less sounds and louder crickets this time.
Tonight, when it was really dark, me and my Mama
went out onto the back porch to listen. I heard- MORE CRICKETS. And I also heard a door shutting- my older cousin came out to ask my Mama something.
I heard the tddddt tddddt of birds calling GOODNIGHT to other birds, I heard the rustling of an animal in the leaves- probably an armadillo. And I heard so many frogs croaking,
it sounded like ROOOA ROOOA. Like a frog choir or something. And I heard the cieling fans buzzing. The crickets where shouting, and there were night noises instead of day noises.

fluffykat33,
you are too cool! i like the name of that tree.
where did you find the name? i have a tree in my
grandparents front yard that i like to climb.
you have inspired me to name it. im going to name it the WatchTree because i can see the
whole left side of my grandaddy’s house and the dirt road out in the front, so i can see who comes by.
Thanx!! you rock,
Hawaiiangaiagirl

I like the conversation and postings so far! Just a reminder: if it your FIRST time posting, I have to approve the first one. After that, when you post, it will show up right away.
Just so you guys know, I’ve been busy painting a room and moving my office. It is very Gaia-inspiring! I’ll post some photos when it is all done!
hawaiiangaiagirl says:
Wow!
Miss Lee, I cant wait to see your office
I bet it’ll look really cool!
doggielover1123 says:
Oh my Gosh! I heard so many sounds… I heard:
A bee buzzing through the roses in the afternoon. bzzz!
A cricket chirping in the grass in the late evening. Chirp Chirp!
The wind in the leaves of the trees in the afternoon. Whoosh!
A crow cawing in the air throughout the day. Caw Caw!
A frog jumping in the grass in the morning. Crr Crr!
I heard the dog who lives next door bark. Ruff Ruff!
I heard an airplane overhead. Pshhhhhh!
I heard people walking by on the sidewalk. Pk pk!
And last but not least I heard the most beautiful song ever. Gaia’s song. The tree’s calling out, the birds singing in their own birdy way, and Gaia calling out to me… It was like being lifted to another land.
Anyway, it’s so cool that you’re remodeling Miss Lee! I can’t wait to see your pictures!!!!

First i would like to say that i could not sit in Vesta because she was wet from rain so I sat on the stone walkway in my front yard.
This morning I went out and this was what I heard;
Birds cawing, Odd-sounding bird, chirping, A bee, more cawing, cars, about five different birds, A BEE ON MY HEAD, something in a tree, and a bird that sounds like a monkey.
The day before yesterday’s evening i heard;
Birds chirping, A crow caw-cawing, a bee, neighbor people laughing, birds chatting, a bug next to me, cars rumbling, dogs barking a vrooming car, lots of birds.
monday afternoon i heard a lot;
a truck, birds, a crow, trees rustling,a bush rustling, a bee whizzing by my head, another truck, another crow, a
police car, birds talking to eachother, a bang, the ac, lots of birds.
Hawaiiangaiagirl, i found the name of my tree beacause of the harvest moon games (videogames where you are a farmer). There is a lady named Vesta and vesta is the name of a goddess. And doggielover i love your description! peace out! :p q:
hawaiiangaiagirl says:
Hey fluffykat33
Oh wow! I totally LOVE the Harvest Moon games.
I have Harvest Moon 64 for Nintendo,
and I have A Wonderful Life for Game Cube.
I play it on the Wii, though. But not much lately. Ive been with my Grandparents and theres alot more nature here than where i live, at the end of a cul-de-sac in Newnan GA. and i have the one for Gameboy. if you have any of these, i wouldent mind some pointers!!! thanx, Hawaiiangaiagirl.
