    Miho’s Waterfall Adventure

    Miho dove into the frigid morning water. The sun was rising over Japan. She floated a ways out past where the waves would knock her off balance. Today was the day that she planned a small exploration with Shinju and two of his new friends, Bee and Storm. They were going to a small, quiet coastline somehwere along the USA. The whole day was set aside just for this trip.
    As she looked out on the ocean’s horizon, three shimmers popped in and out of the air. It was the dolphins. “HEY!” Miho shouted. They three replied with all sorts of squeals that couldn’t be interpreted because they shouted over eachother.
    They rushed towards her, and pictures of various sealife then flooded into her mind. Once they were all calm, Miho grabbed hold of Storm, the largest of the three, and they began their journey.

    After an some time of swimming hastily through the sea, a coast became visable. They slowed down. Once they arrived, the three dolphins began searching far and wide, curious about all the new surroundings. They didn’t get too close though, in fear of people seeing them. Miho swam closer to the shore. It was empty; no one was on the beach. Miho fiddled in the sand and dug some shells out. She then noticed a breach in the sand. There was a river connected to the sea! She swam to it and began to travel upstream.
    For a small river, it was deep! She would be totally covered if a stranger came by. Miho kept going. Every now and then she saw a few salmon, but other than that it was oddly quiet. After some amount of traveling, she came across a huge waterfall! And splashing in and out of it were tons of salmon! Miho gazed in awe. She got closer. The small fish flailed and jumped in the same way as they would if they were out of water. As Miho watched closer, she saw that it was actually a strong and skillful maneuver.
    I wish I could do that! Miho though. She didn’t know what force compelled her to do what she did next. Miho got a fast start and she took off for the waterfall. She was going to try to swim up it too. She hit the base of the fall and was greeted with a whip of water to the face. She struggled and tried to push her way up. She wasn’t getting very far. Miho gathered all her willpower. The scar on her hand began to itch and burn. Suddenly, the water around her feet bended into a sort of platform. Miho pushed off and shot like a rocket up the high waterfall, water whipping crazily behind her.
    She breached the top and tumbled into the calmer water. Miho analyzed what just happened. A smile stretched across her face, and she kissed her scarred hand. The sun was was getting low. She swam back to Shinju, Bee, and Storm.

    Remembering.

    Miho groped in the dark for the taxi cab’s door handle. The darkness at two A.M. felt like a thick blanket, increasing the heavy weight of her exhaustion. “Miho, I know you are the dolphin girl and all, but that doesn’t mean you can’t open a car door.” said Ojisan. Miho, again groped in the dark for the taxi’s handle, but the dark blanket was too much for her to use enough energy to open the door, let alone, find it. Ojisan let out a prolonged sigh, and then opened the taxi door. Miho climbed in slowly, sat down, and buckled her seatbelt. Ojisan quickly climbed in after her said a few fast words in Japanese to the driver, and then sat down. The car began to move, picking up speed as they went along. Seeing this as an opportunity to go back to sleep, Miho gladly took it, and felt herself drift into a much- needed sleep. Some time later, Miho found herself being roughly awakened. “Huh?” Miho exclaimed, she had forgotten she was in a car. “Miho! Get up, or we will miss our flight!” said Ojisan, hurriedly. “Flight, what flight, you never told me about a flight!” Miho exclaimed. Ojisan rolled his eyes “What did you pack that suitcase for then?” Miho looked at him, puzzled. Ojisan rolled his eyes again. “Just take your suitcase, I’ll re-explain this when we get on the plane.” Miho took her navy-blue suitcase and rolled it to the glass double doors of the Nagoya Kamaki International Airport. The sun was now rising and the crispness of a new day began to set in, it wasn’t long before Miho got inside the airport, that, the crispness had vanished, and a sea of people chattering on their cell phones overtook Miho’s senses. “Just hold my hand, and you won’t get lost.” said Ojisan, holding out his hand. Miho reluctantly took it and allowed herself to be pulled this way, and that in the noisy commotion. When they wound their way to customs Ojisan gave the man there passports, answered all his questions and drug Miho to the plane waiting area. “So what is this flight about?” asked Miho. “Well,” Ojisan began, when a loud voice over the intercom cut in. “that’s our flight!” Ojisan exclaimed. He quickly took Miho by the hand and sprinted to the boarding passage. He gave their tickets to the desk lady and boarded the plane once everyone on the plane got seated the plane started down the runway, faster and faster until it took off. The Nagoya landscape got smaller and smaller, until it was hidden by the winter clouds. “So, Ojisan, where are we going and why?” Ojisan turned and faced her. “We are going on a pilgrimage,” ‘what?” Miho, cut in. “My sister, your mother, had planned on going to the Oregon coast after your trip to Alaska, the whales come in, to feed at this time of year, we are going to meet your friend, Mr. Hernandez.” Miho felt like leaping for joy, she was going to see Mr. Hernandez! Finally, someone she could recognize! “Wait,” said Miho “which city are we going to?” “We are going to fly to the city of Portland, and walk around a bit, it is home to the largest bookstore in the United States, which means we can read some poetry, like your father, and then drive to Depot bay, the best whale watching spot on the coast, and the world’s smallest bay.” Miho took this all in, “We must be driving a lot then, the city, and the coast?” She said “Actually, the city is pretty close, so, there won’t be much driving at all, that’s why so many people go there.” “Get some rest, Miho you need it.” He said. Miho, once again, drifted off to sleep. She had gotten, virtually, no sleep the other night, packing, and unpacking, then re-packing, she stayed up until 11:00, and she had woken up at 2:00 A.M. so basically, she was pretty tired. Maybe it was the elevation, maybe it was the lack of sleep, and maybe it was the airplane food, but for some reasons unknown (to Miho, at least) the strangest dreams of all, are on a plane. Miho was in Alaska, sitting on the dock, a blanket around her shoulders, shivering and waiting for her parents to return, but somehow, she already knew that they could never return, so she waited, and waited, she still had hope, people shook their heads at her, telling her to give up, but Miho waited. A decade passed, then a century, then a millennium, but Miho was still as young as she had been, forever young. The second the millennium passed, Gaia came to her, but Miho turned away from her, she would never trust the sea again. “Miho, crest of the wave, listen,” said Gaia “my blood is turning to poison, the sea is mourning, your parents are worried” “Of course you would know about my parents,” Miho cut in “You swallowed them up!” “Miho,” said Gaia “Can you control what your blood swallows up?” Miho turned away. Gaia let out a prolonged sigh, and within that sigh, the dust was blown far away, and the clouds were heaved out, and the world was washed with a new fragrance, and Miho forgave Gaia for eternity…

    “Miho… wake up…our pilgrimage has begun.” Ojisan gently tapped Miho on the shoulder “whaaah?” said Miho, squinting at the brightness of the fluorescent plane lights, “Our plane has landed, Miho…” Miho rose out of her seat. Outside, the rain was coming down in buckets; she could clearly see that they had landed. “Let’s go.” said Ojisan. They weaved there way through the line of people, and pretty soon were off the plane. The airport wasn’t as packed as the Nagoya airport so luckily Miho didn’t have to take Ojisan’s hand. They inched their way through customs and finally got to the outside of the airport. It was outdoors, but, there was a glass roof over them, protecting them from the rain. On the parking lot wall, some vines crept there way up the beige colored blocks of cement. “Our rental car is waiting at the bus area” said Ojisan. So they walked down a staircase the same color of the wall, and after some searching, found their rental. Ojisan took the keys from the rental check-in lady, and then they hopped in and sped off. The large area around the airport was mostly home to construction vehicles, such as dump trucks and cranes. The area was extremely muddy, due to the rainy conditions, and the damp smell of mildew lingered in the air. It was the more unfortunate part on the outskirts of Portland, but, as they got closer and closer to the city, it began to look better. First, the smell disappeared, and then the construction vehicles, and finally, the mud turned into wet sidewalks. The rain was streaming down the car window, but the people downtown didn’t seem to mind, they were perfectly happy with the rain, it was their natural habitat. Most people weren’t even carrying umbrellas, most people were carrying books, almost everyone she saw, were either reading or writing, this made Miho think about her father. But what made her think about her father even more was the bookstore. It seemed like a normal Powell’s bookstore when you first saw it, but as you got closer, you could see that it took up an entire city block! It was her father’s definition of heaven. I wonder how he sees heaven now. She thought. Ojisan spent a minute finding a parking space, then they hopped out and sprinted in the rain to the bookstore. The bookstore was like the Nagoya Kamaki International airport, it was packed. “Miho,” said Ojisan, “You meet me in the lobby in 2 hours, then we leave for the beach, understood?” he asked “Hai” said Miho “ok, take my watch so you don’t forget” Miho took it from his hand, then ran off to find the poetry section. She snuck to the front of the line for the information desk, no one seemed to notice, they were more busy reading, or chatting to the person next to them. “Can I help you find something?” the man said. “Yes, I was looking for poetry.” Said Miho “You go straight down the hall until you find the green section, and then go to aisle 461” he said sleepily. “Thank you said Miho, then ran off to the green section, the walls had random posters and stickers on them, usually they were just words, but sometimes they had entire murals on them. Miho quickly found the green section, then looked down the aisles 465, 464,463,462,461. She raced down to 461 and began to search for her father’s favorite poem, The Sea By Bryan W. Procter. She began searching alphabetically, until….she found it. She opened it up to the table of contents, but, before she could look up the poem, she saw the inscription that read;

    To Yoko, happy anniversary!

    She felt a lump rise in her throat, it had to be her father, it had to have been. Her eyes began to water, her father had held this, and so had her mother, it felt like their presence was still there, in the book. She turned to page 53, and there was the poem;

    The sea, the sea, the open sea
    The blue, the fresh, the ever free!
    This made Miho choke up even more, and, before she knew it, a tear fell from her eye, then another, and another, until she was sobbing. But they weren’t sad tears, they were tears of joy, her parents had existed, be happy for their life as opposed to crying for their death.

    Elizabeth’s Fairy Ring Dream

    Elizabeth snuck out of bed, if she was quiet Maizey wouldn’t wake up. She looked at the clock above her door it was 4:03 am. Her window was open,because of the hot summer night before. She quickly grabbed her sweatshirt and crept out the window.Maizey flinched, and Elizabeth held her breath.
    Once she was out she sprinted up the path parellel toSingSong Creek.She could here the gurgling song before she saw the creek. When she saw the big oak she hugged it and pictured Rachel’s farm. Suddenly She felt like someone was wringing her out like a sponge then it stopped. She opened her eyes and she was standing in front of the white birch tree in front of Rachel’s farmhouse.
    It was 8 days after summer vacation started, Rachel was moving in 2 days. Tere was an oak in front of Rachel’s room window. Elizabeth climbed it and in a minute she was tapping on her window.
    Rachel woke up and opened it.
    “what ,”she whispered.
    ‘come on ” Elizabeth mouthed. Rachel grabbed her jacket and climbed down the tree. Once the girls were down they instantly hugged and burst into a fit of giggles. They didn’t need to speak they knew they were laughing at each others pajamas. Elizabeth was wearing cotton pj’s with dogs on them and Rachel’s were silky with cats on them.
    “I’ve got something to show you.” Elizabeth whispered. She held out her hand and Rachel grabbed it. They walked together to the birch tree. Elizabeth put one hand on the tree and one still holding Rachel’s.She closed her eyes and thought about the gurgling song of Singsong creek. In a few minutes they were there.Then Elibeth let go of Rachel and focused on going into the earth.Afterthey were in the roots of the oak she said,”Rachel have you ever dreamed of a fairy ring?”
    “Yes I’ve always wondered if they were real.”she answered.
    “well they are.” said elizabeth, as the earth opened up before them.Elizabeth looked at Rachel and she looked back.They entered the fairy ring and instantly a swarm of fairies were there to greet them.
    “this is the best thing ever!” said Rachel ,her yes lighting up as the fairie circled around them and lifted them off the ground.
