Monarchs On The Move!

BACK TO SCHOOL day, here in upstate New York. So it is, as far as I’m concerned, officially autumn! The Autumnal Equinox isn’t until September 22nd, but signs of the seasons are all around.
One of the coolest is the migration of Monarch Butterflies. My friends at the Morton Arboretum sent me these great videos of their monarch emerging from its chrysalis. Have you seen the any Monarch Butterflies?

If you listened to the Back-to-School episode of Radio Gaia, you’ll hear Jen Schauss from Cornell’s Lab of Ornithology talk about “citizen scientist” and how important it is for working scientist to have regular people help supply data.
They need your help tracking monarch butterflies!

According to Monarch Watch.org, the peak period for migrating monarch in my hometown is…RIGHT NOW! (Monarch Watch requires a fee because you actually catch and tag the butterflies. Journey North has a great page of information and ways to get started observing the migration and helping science, help Gaia!
