Plankton or Plastic?
These images are startling. The photographer-artist Christopher Jordon, is a master at showing the runaway nature of our consumption.

Be sure to check out the rest of his work.
To understand how this happens, watch this video. 6X as much plastic as plankton?! UGH!
Awareness is the first step to changing anything. I like how this school in California taught first-grade students about the problem with plastics.
What can YOU do to help raise awareness? What can you do to use less plastic in your life. Let’s share some ideas!

How did that bird swallow all that plastic?
Lee Welles-author says:
Because of the colors, birds mistake plastic for food. Some of these birds are chicks and the parent birds fed them the bits. Plastic bags in the water look like jellyfish to turtles and other creatures. Nature is not designed to recognize plastic.

That’s just awful. I believe I told you about Invent Idaho, weel I just got back from the state competition in Boise (Idaho’s capitol). I placed best of category, which is top honors of my category (adaptations). The person who won best of show (best over all) is my best friends little sister. Her idea was to have a rig that hooked on to the back of a oil ship. The machine would create a vortex that would suck up trash from the ocean floor. the machine would also sort out the trash into categories, paper, metal, and plastic. it would melt down the plastic into nurdles. Nurdles are small plastic pellets that are sold to businesses who melt them down and use them to make stuff with molds. the machine would also have fake rodotic sharks “swimming” around the rig to keep away animal, so they don’t get sucked into the vortex. if an animal should get sucked into the voetex, they would be despensed back into the ocean safley.
I think this is a really great idea. Of course we don’t have the technology for this right now, but it is still a great idea.

Oh my gosh, gaiagirls101! That invention sounds absolutely amazing!! Would you mind sending over some blueprints, so I can get working on it?

Of course, all copyright and credit would go to your friend’s little sister, of course…
