Keeping Bees

матрациFriday my dad got bees. I helped install the second hive! First, you take the rectangular box and take the lid off. Secondly you carefully remove the queen, who is in a separate box. Thirdly, you take the can of sugar water out and quickly put the top back on. Then you hit the box on the hive and dump the bees out. Lastly you put the queen in and put the hive’s top on.Watch the video below to see a professional do it.

Each queen has a blue dot on her back. The blue means she was born in 2005. Each hive has 10,000 bees-there is only 100-200 drones (boys). Bee hives aren’t the kind you’d think of (the oval shaped yellow ones on Winnie the Pooh) they are square and can ‘bee’ painted any color, ours are white.

We are getting chickens soon. I just hope my dog doesn’t chase them. My dad is building the chicken coop. We looked at a chicken coop for sale-it was $1,000 and it didn’t even have insulation! Ours has a solar power door, a window, 2 human doors and insulation. I hope we get them soon.

    Wow that is so cool! I am almost got chickens once, but then we got a huge snowstorm (almost 3 1/2 feet of snow in some spots) and my dad mentioned that I would have to go and shovel a pathway for them if we had chickens. my parents also brought up the matter of when to butcher them, and that kind of put a damper on things. :( . I’ve always wanted to live on a farm, but I would probably get to close to the animals. So, I’ve settled with being a farm vetrinarian.

    I got my “blue dot fact” fact wrong. It’s not 05 that it means but the blue dot means the queen was born in a year that ended in a 0 or a 5. Our queen was born in 2010.

    The bees have been drinking sugar water “beecause” they haven’t finished building the honey comb.
    I read in a book that the bees on a island get drunck! People there leave their beer out and the bees drink it. When they come back to the hive the guard bees smell them and if they’re drunck they don’t smell like the Queen so the guard bees kill them!
